David Youmans, MD, FACR, was presented the Radiology Society of New Jersey (RSNJ) Gold Medal Award — the highest honor RSNJ presents to members — in recognition of his work in the state on behalf of the radiologic profession and dedication to his patients in New Jersey. He has played a major role nationally as well, serving as an American College of Radiology® (ACR®) Councilor and Alternate Councilor since 2011, and a past Chair of the American College of Radiology Association® (ACRA®) Radiology Advocacy Network (RAN).

A dedicated supporter of advocacy at the local, state, and national levels, one of Dr. Youmans’ proudest accomplishments was working with New Jersey lawmakers to pass legislation mandating that insurance companies pay for digital tomosynthesis mammograms. Dr. Youmans mentors residents and young physicians, teaching them the importance of advocacy and how it can magnify their impact in ways that will help patients and their fellow physicians.

As Dr. Youmans demonstrates, radiologists at all stages of their careers can make an advocacy difference. Consider joining the RAN; sign up to make sure your voice is heard. Medical students who are interested in advocacy can also become involved in the ACRA’s Pre-Radiology section of the RAN (Pre-RAN).
